Sardinia, Italy - A 7-Day Costal & Mountain Adventure

Dates: TBD

Explore the untamed beauty of eastern Sardinia on this 7-day journey filled with rugged hikes, dramatic coastlines, and rich cultural moments. Start with three days in Santa Maria Navarrese, trekking sea cliffs, descending to the turquoise shores of Cala Mariolu, and navigating the legendary Cengia Giradili ledge. Then head north to Orosei for canyon hikes, serene kayaking on Lake Cedrino, and a hands-on pasta-making experience. Summit Monte Corrasi and close the week with a peaceful hike to a hidden cove. It’s the perfect blend of adventure, nature, and Sardinian soul.

  • What’s on deck for today?

    • Hike Description: This beautiful coastal trail between Pedra Longa and Santa Maria Navarrese is a perfect introduction to Sardinia’s untamed eastern coastline. Ideal for the first day of your adventure, this hike offers breathtaking Mediterranean scenery without being too demanding physically.

    • Hiking Distance: 6 km

    • Elevation: 250 m

    • Trail Notes:

      • The trail is well-marked and mostly follows old shepherd paths.

      • Some parts have loose rock underfoot, so good footwear is recommended.

      • Great for photography—especially early morning or late afternoon when the cliffs are golden.

    What You’ll See:

    • 🏞️ Limestone Cliffs: The hike begins near the towering sea stack of Pedra Longa, a 128-meter-high limestone pinnacle that rises dramatically from the sea, resembling a stone ship’s mast.

    • 🌊 Turquoise Sea Views: The trail hugs the coast, offering stunning, uninterrupted views of the Golfo di Orosei. Expect vibrant hues of blue and green, especially on clear days when the sea sparkles under the sun.

    • 🌿 Maquis & Wildflowers: You’ll walk through fragrant Mediterranean scrub, with juniper, myrtle, and rosemary lining the path. In spring, wildflowers add bursts of color to the trail.

    • 🐐 Mountain Goats & Falcons: You may spot wild goats climbing the rocky slopes, or see peregrine falcons soaring overhead along the cliffs.

    • 🏖️ Santa Maria Navarrese: As you descend toward town, you'll be greeted by the inviting shoreline and views of the 11th-century church that gives the town its name.

  • Hike Description: This is one of the most rewarding and iconic hikes in Sardinia — a journey from the wild highlands of the Golgo Plateauto the shimmering turquoise shores of Cala Mariolu, capped off with a scenic boat ride along the dramatic cliffs of the Golfo di Orosei.

    • Hiking Distance: 6 km

    • Elevation Decent : 500 m

    • Trail Notes:

      • The Trail begins atop the Golgo Plateau near Loc. Piredda (approximately 500 m a.s.l.).

      • It descends via the ridge of Serr’e Lattone, weaving past shepherd huts, wooden ladders (“Scalones”), and a dramatic rock arch.

      • Route ends on the stunning pebble beach of Cala Mariolu.

      • The boat return from Cala Mariolu sails south along the Gulf of Orosei back to Santa Maria Navarrese.

    What You’ll See:

🌄 High Plateau Vistas: The journey begins on the windswept Golgo Plateau, offering panoramic views of inland limestone cliffs and the vast Mediterranean horizon.

🪜Wooden 'Scalones' & Archways: Historic shepherd-made juniper ladders and a natural rock arch carved into the ridge — iconic features of this trail

🛖 Shepherds’ Huts: Discover small stone shelters reflecting traditional pastoral life on Sardinia’s rugged interior.

🌊Dramatic Descent: A striking 500 m drop unveils turquoise waters of Cala Mariolu, contrasting with towering vertical limestone walls.

🏖️ Cala Mariolu Beach: A jewel of round white pebbles (nicknamed "Ispuligidenie"—“snowball pebbles”) and crystal-clear sea. Ideal for swimming or relaxing.

🛥️ Scenic Boat Return: Sail past dramatic coastal cliffs, sea caves, and iconic landmarks like Punta Caroddi and Pedra Longa, gliding back into Santa Maria’s sheltered marina.

  • Hike Description: This hike is a true Sardinian classic — a spectacular, rugged route that descends from the high inland plateau of Golgo to the coast via the legendary Cengia Giradili, a narrow ledge trail etched into one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe.

    • You begin on the Golgo Plateau, a wild karst landscape peppered with sinkholes, twisted juniper trees, and old shepherd pens. As you head eastward, the trail gradually narrows and begins to trace the dramatic limestone face of Punta Giradili, a 700-meter cliff that plunges vertically into the Mediterranean below.

The Cengia Giradili is the heart of the hike — a natural balcony clinging to the side of the cliff, offering breathtaking, unobstructed views of the Golfo di Orosei. Below, you’ll see tiny beaches and crashing waves; above, birds of prey circle lazily in the updrafts. This is Sardinia at its most untamed and majestic.

After traversing the cengia (ledge), the trail descends through rocky switchbacks, sparse pine groves, and open vistas toward Pedra Longa, a striking limestone sea stack that marks your endpoint on the coast.

    • Hiking Distance: ~10 km

    • Elevation: 750 m decent, 350 m ascent

    • Difficulty: Challenging.(exposed sections & narrow ledges)

    What You’ll See:

🌄 Wild highlands: The Golgo Plateau’s solitude and ancient terrain.

🏞️ Epic cliffside views: The Cengia Giradili offers one of the best panoramic coastal traverses in Europe.

🪻 Botanical richness: Mediterranean herbs, wildflowers, and hardy trees grow from cracks in the limestone.

🏞️ Geological drama: Towering cliffs, exposed ledges, and natural rock formations.

🍷 Satisfying descent: Ending at the dramatic Pedra Longa sea pillar, where you can dip your feet in the sea or enjoy a celebratory drink.

  • Hike Description: This day blends natural wonder with a transition to a new chapter of the journey. You'll leave behind Santa Maria Navarrese and make your way north to Orosei, but not before exploring one of Sardinia’s most jaw-dropping natural sites: the Gorropu Canyon, often called the "Grand Canyon of Europe."

    • The adventure begins with a transfer inland to the Supramonte Mountains. From there, a scenic trail leads you down into the Codula di Flumineddu valley, a green corridor flanked by limestone cliffs, shaded forests, and the sound of birdsong echoing through the trees.

    • As the trail deepens, the terrain becomes more dramatic. Towering canyon walls begin to close in, rising as high as 500 meters on either side, forming Gola di Gorropu — a narrow gorge carved over millions of years by water and tectonic forces. The deeper you go, the quieter it gets, with only the rustle of leaves and the occasional drip of water breaking the silence.

    • Inside the canyon, you can scramble among massive boulders, explore caves, and marvel at the sheer scale of the rock formations. In spring, you might even see rare flowers growing from the canyon walls — this area is a biodiversity hotspot and home to endangered species.

    • After the canyon exploration, a jeep transfer brings you back up from the valley floor to the main road, where your journey continues with a comfortable ride to Orosei, your base for the next set of coastal adventures.

    • Hiking Distance: ~10 km

    • Elevation: 750 m decent, 350 m ascent

    • Duration: 4-5 Hours (plus transfer)

    • Difficulty: Moderate (rocky terrain inside the canyon)

🚙 Easy logistics: Jeep-assisted exit from the canyon makes it accessible yet adventurous.

🌊 Transition to Orosei: From the interior wilderness to a laid-back coastal village.

  • Day Overview: Today offers a change of pace — from rugged coastal hikes to a serene paddle through the heart of Sardinia’s countryside, followed by an intimate, hands-on cooking experience with local flavor. The adventure begins with a transfer inland to the Supramonte Mountains. From there, a scenic trail leads you down into the Codula di Flumineddu valley, a green corridor flanked by limestone cliffs, shaded forests, and the sound of birdsong echoing through the trees.

    • The morning begins at the tranquil Lake Cedrino, a hidden gem nestled among limestone cliffs and dense Mediterranean vegetation just outside Orosei. After a quick paddling intro, you’ll gently glide across the emerald-green waters in a kayak or canoe, exploring the calm inlets, secret coves, and riverbanks that teem with birds, reeds, and reflections of the surrounding Supramonte hills. The landscape here is peaceful and untouched. Towering cliffs rise above the water, goats and sheep graze quietly in the distance, and the silence is broken only by the sound of your paddle dipping in the water. It’s a time to slow down, take deep breaths, and connect with the raw, quiet beauty of inland Sardinia.

    • After the paddle, you’ll return to Orosei for an afternoon of cultural immersion and comfort: a traditional Sardinian pasta-making workshop led by local women. You’ll learn to make culurgiones — beautifully hand-pinched dumplings filled with potato, mint, and pecorino — or malloreddus, the iconic gnocchi of the island.

    • The experience finishes with a shared dinner, where you’ll enjoy the very dishes you’ve created, alongside regional specialties like local wine, roasted vegetables, cheeses, and homemade desserts. It’s a meal made with your own hands, served in the warmth of a Sardinian kitchen or agriturismo garden, surrounded by good company.

  • Hike Description: Today’s journey takes you into the Supramonte di Oliena, a stark and stunning limestone mountain range in central Sardinia, to summit the island’s second-highest peak: Monte Corrasi (1,463 meters).

The trail begins near the Madonna della Neve church or from Valle Lanaittu, depending on the chosen route. You’ll climb steadily through fragrant forests of holm oak, juniper, and wild olive trees, entering a landscape shaped by wind, water, and time.

As you ascend, the trees give way to rocky highlands and karst formations — weathered cliffs, sinkholes, and lunar-like terrain. The views grow wider with every step: the lush valleys below, the dramatic ridgelines of the Supramonte, and, on clear days, even glimpses of the Golfo di Orosei shimmering on the eastern horizon.

The summit ridge is wide and open, offering 360-degree panoramas that feel truly remote and wild. Along the way, you may spot wild mouflons, griffon vultures, and hardy alpine flowers that cling to the limestone crevices.

    • Pack enough water — there are no reliable springs on the route.

    • The summit can be windy — bring layers even on sunny days.

🤫 Quiet trails: Far from the coast’s crowds, this is Sardinia at its most serene and untamed.

  • Hike Description: Your final day in Sardinia is a quiet, soulful journey through one of the lesser-known stretches of the Gulf of Orosei. The hike to Cala Ziu Santoru offers a blend of solitude, natural beauty, and a satisfying sense of discovery — a hidden cove accessible only by foot or sea, far from the crowds.

The trail begins near Buchi Arta or an access road south of Orosei, gradually entering a lush Mediterranean scrubland filled with juniper, myrtle, wild olive, and fragrant herbs. Birdsong and the rustling of lizards accompany you as the path winds along the edge of limestone cliffs, offering dramatic views of the turquoise sea below.

As you approach the cove, the trail descends through pockets of pine and exposed rock, eventually reaching the secluded beach of Cala Ziu Santoru. This tiny crescent of white pebbles and clear blue water is surrounded by rugged cliffs — wild, silent, and pristine.

There are no buildings, no crowds — only the sound of waves and the soft crunch of stones underfoot. It’s an ideal place to rest, swim, snack, or simply reflect on the week’s adventures.
